Parafield Gardens High School has a growing international program.
The school has great cultural diversity, with staff and students from over 40 Non English-speaking backgrounds international students are made to feel welcome, and generally fit in very quickly. Their Australian experience at PGHS can be a truly multicultural one.
With many local students studying ESL (English as a Second Language), international students can undertake necessary English language learning in a mainstream class. In addition, teachers from all subject areas have been trained to provide some ESL support.
The school enrolls students into several programs available for overseas students.
The Graduate Program for long-term international students. Overseas students enrolling at PGHS will have completed an Intensive Secondary English Course (ISEC) at Adelaide Secondary School of English. This enables them to enter mainstream classes to access learning in any of the subjects available to local students. Students may choose ESL (English as a Second Language) as one of these subjects. Students choose the Graduate Program if they wish to complete their senior studies in South Australia and gain the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). International students stay in government-approved and managed homestay accommodation. This means that they become members of a family in a very supportive environment.
Study Abroad Program. Students study in mainstream classes (including ESL where required) to improve their use of the English language and to learn about life and education in Australia. Students may choose a three, six, nine or twelve-month course. Students stay in government-approved and managed homestay accommodation.
Short-term Visits. Small groups of students on study/cultural visits have programs ranging from one to four weeks. Programs include English classes, experience of mainstream lessons in buddy classes and excursions in and around Adelaide.
Sister City Schools. PGHS is situated in Salisbury City District. Salisbury City has a Sister City relationship with Mobara, Japan. PGHS is involved in annual exchange visits between several schools in Mobara and schools in the Salisbury District, aimed at strengthening educational, cultural and social links between the two cities.
Sister School. PGHS has a sister school partnership with Hitorizawa High School from Yokohama, Japan. Exchange visits are conducted once every two years, allowing students to immerse themselves in a culture other than their own. Hitorizawa High School is scheduled to visit regularly.
Japan Study Tour. Students from PGHS are offered the opportunity to visit Japan on a study tour. This includes visiting famous sites in Kyoto, Hiroshima, Osaka and Tokyo, as well as visiting our sister school in Yokohama.
